Since the early eighties, my love of jazz has been focused not only on pianists
but more and more on bassists, after having studied and compared many different bass lines on my records: I extremely love that sonorous, wooden sound!
This love started while listening to records of John Kirby, Wellman Braud and Jimmy Blanton, grew when enjoying Slam Stewart, Ray Brown, Milt Hinton, Percy Heath and Charlie Haden on stage, and finally culminated with my top hero: Ron Carter! Interview
After having met Ron Carter briefly in 1983 in Montreux in order to get some autographs, I followed his long
career by buying and listening to most of his records.
Since 1998, my partner and I have
many times traveled to New York to visit
Milt & Mona Hinton and to
hear Ron Carter on stage.
In December 1999, in response to my inquiry, Ron uttered the desire to come to Switzerland with his quartet that – except once to Vienna – never had been invited to Europe …
And – my dream came true: four concerts with the outstanding Ron Carter Quartet (Stephen Scott resp. Sir Roland Hanna, piano, Steve Kroon, perc. and Payton Crossley, drums) took place in October 2001 in Bülach and Zürich Poster and in May 2002 at the Jazzfestival Basel and the Victoria Hall Geneva
For many reasons, this top highlight will forever remain an unique and unrepeatable once-in-lifetime event!
