Projects

In the mid-seventies, I was asked by British musicians to arrange concerts for them in Switzerland – and that's how I started this costly, but, nevertheless, most pleasant non-profit hobby: speedy jazz promotion & support .

Amongst those British musicians whom I brought to my country were Ron Weatherburn (the best European ragtime pianist of all times), and, for the first time on tour in September 1977, the Stan Tracey Quartet, featuring Art Themen (saxes), Dave Green (bass) and Brian Spring (drums).

Convinced of the outstanding piano art of Tracey, whose style is still incomparable, and – despite the huge financial loss – I have never regretted to have taken the risk for this ten-day tour: the musical success and the experiences gained were truly worth it!

At the opening of an exhibition of Milt Hinton's photographical oeuvre in November 1998 in Flushing/NY, I was asked by the American saxophonist Harold Ousley (another fine musician, who never achieved his due recognition) to introduce him to the Swiss jazz scene. Swiss Tour

In October 1999, I arranged for him a one-week Swiss tour, together with the famous pianist Horace Parlan, Isla Eckinger on bass and Douglas Sides on drums.

Drawbacks:

In summer 2002, I heard a tremendous pianist in New York and immediately decided to work for him: Steve Kuhn.

Steve Kuhn is, especially amongst musicians, highly appreciated, but nobody ever brought his longstanding trio (feat. David Finck, b and Billy Drummond, d) to Europe.

Around the same time, I got mail from the US West Coast, from Julian Priester, who wanted to bring his quartet to Europe for the first time. He had always been a famous musician, but meanwhile the European jazz scene seems to have forgotten him.

In October 2002, I heard a young Swiss group in Frauenfeld that impressed me very much – and I put all opportunities together and organized a joint eight-days European tour for all three bands with six concerts in March 2003.

This tour was fixed within four months only. My partner and I spent all Xmas / New Year 2002/03 creating posters and bi-lingual promotional materials. Remember Trane

But, unfortunately, by the end of January 2003 the entire tour for the three bands had to be cancelled due to an emergency operation of Steve Kuhn in February 2003: further thousands of Swiss francs were lost! My partner and I simply couldn't afford to re-arrange the tour with two bands only, and due to my strict principles as well as for reasons of respect I did not want to replace Steve Kuhn by another pianist! Although, thank God, Steve has survived the surgery, there is currently no other Swiss tour planned for him.

By the way, I still have dozens of Steve Kuhn's trio compact discs for sale! Please ask for offer. Thanks.
